Salivary proteinase activity: A potential biomarker for preterm premature rupture of the membranes
Article Abstract:
A study reporting the potential use of salivary proteinase activity as a marker for developing subsequent preterm premature rupture of the membranes (pPROM) is illustrated. Saliva provides an easily accessible and stable sample for a protease activity assay and requires minimal sample preparation and the measurement of proteases in saliva from pregnant patients might provide early diagnosis of elevated membrane level metalloproteinases activity and thereby provide an early means for identifying women at increased risk for pPROM.

Multilocus interactions at maternal tumor necrosis factor-[alpha], tumor necrosis factor receptors, interleukin-6 and interleukin-6 receptor genes predict spontaneous preterm labor in European-American women
Article Abstract:
Genetic variations in the tumor necrosis factor-[alpha], TNF receptors, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and IL-6 receptor genes predict high-risk status for spontaneous preterm birth in European-American women. Spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB) and low birth weight caused by preterm birth are primary risk factors for infant morbidity and mortality in the US and multiple extrinsic factors like infection, stress, socioeconomic status, nutrition, and behavioral factors are associated with the risk of sPTB.
